"Ancient Port City"
An ancient port city on Turkey's Anatolian plateau, Kaunos was located close to Dalyan, an urban town in Turkey's Muğla Province. The history of Kaunos dates back to the 4th Century BCE, however its trading past dates back to 10th Century BCE. It thrived with two ports, of which the southern port was functional through the Hellenistic era, while the other was used until Kaunos fell into desolation. Its area is also an interesting paleogeographic case study, that has silted eight kilometers (5 miles) away from its former location. A repostitory of antiquities, excavations across Kaunos have unveiled several intriguing finds of which the neck of a Protogeometric amphora, ceramics, and acropolis are some of its most valuable revelations. Albeit in ruins today, the ancient city is a quiet expanse that delineates tales of Persian, Greek and Roman era.
