Fort King George Historic Site
"Enduring English Fort"
Dating back to the 1720s, Fort King George is touted as the oldest of its kind in the state. Built under the supervision of Colonel John “Tuscarora Jack” Barnwell, the fort served the purpose of contributing to economic expansion by way of defending the British claim along the Altamaha River. However, the troops stationed here suffered from malaria owing to poor hygiene. Flooding of the river, constant threat of invasion, lack of sufficient food supply, and other conditions further added to their woes. The fort was eventually abandoned, and the lands today feature a replica that offers a glimpse at the area's past. A museum and other structures located within the premises enable a deeper understanding of the history of the fort and its surroundings.
