The Jerusalem Mill Village is a landmark and a site of immense historic value located on the banks of the Little Gunpowder Falls River. The village features numerous historic buildings at the center of which is a restored mill that dates back to the 18th century and is still operational. A bustling blacksmith shop with lots of period articles and tools makes for interesting viewing. There usually are volunteers on site that are happy to take you on a tour of the village and explain its significance. There are picnic tables along the river as well as hiking trails making this spot perfect for a fun family outing.
This unusual museum called Baltimore Streetcar Museum pays tribute to the iconic streetcars that once plied the city's thoroughfares. Hundreds of people—tourists and locals alike, visit each year to ride a streetcar, explore the museum's many displays, or enjoy a carhouse tour. Founded in 1966, the museum also shows a free film that traces the streetcar's evolution. A gift shop sells related memorabilia.
This large piece of wilderness (over 450 acres) offers miles of trails for hiking and jogging. One of the main trails circumscribes Lake Roland, which was once one of the city's main reservoirs. Other trails reach back into densely forested areas, some taking you over scenic footbridges and others through small tunnels. The only caveat is that the park is a popular destination for dog walkers, and the less rugged trails are often crowded. Otherwise, it's a great urban escape.
