Das Brüsseler Rathaus ist ein erhabenes gotisches Wunderwerk, das den Mittelpunkt des ikonischen Brüsseler Grand Place bildet und ohne Zweifel eines der aufwendigsten Bürgergebäude der Stadt ist. Das Rathaus wurde hauptsächlich von zwei Architekten entworfen: der linke Flügel wurde 1402 von Jacques van Thienen und der rechte Flügel 1445-1450 von Jean van Ruysbroeck entworfen. Die beiden hinteren Flügel wurden erst viel später, 1712, hinzugefügt, aber sie wurden in Harmonie mit dem architektonischen Stil des ursprünglichen, L-förmigen Gebäudes entworfen. Das Atomium wurde von dem Ingenieur André Waterkeyn und den Architekten André und Jean Polak für die Weltausstellung von 1958 geschaffen und ist ein von der Struktur eines Atoms inspiriertes Gebilde. Genauer gesagt, basiert der Entwurf auf der quaderförmigen Form einer Einheitszelle aus Eisenkristallen, die 65 Milliarden Mal vergrößert wurde, um eine Gesamthöhe von 102 Metern zu erreichen. Die neun glänzenden Kugeln werden von Röhren zusammengehalten, wobei jede Kugel für eine der neun belgischen Provinzen repräsentativ ist.
