Visitors to the Museum of Science in Boston have always been fascinated by the World's Largest (Air Insulated) Van De Graff Generator. A pair of 40 feet (12 meters) high spheres are the center of attraction at the Theater of Electricity. The generator was built in 1933 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study the atom. In the year 1956 it was moved to the museum, to demonstrate, to the general public, how high voltage electricity can produce artificial lightning. The generator is capable of producing 1,000,000 volts of static electricity. Demonstrations are held daily and each show is about 20 minutes long.
