Jamia Masjid

The Jamia Masjid, or the Shelley Street Mosque, is located off Hong Kong's famed Central Mid-Levels Escalator. This mosque, which is the oldest in Hong Kong, is featured on the special administrative region's heritage trail and is preserved as a historical landmark. The original structure was built in 1850, though it was rebuilt and expanded in size in 1915 to accommodate the growing numbers of worshipers. Today, this beautiful mosque, which stands within a tranquil courtyard and is an exponent of the Indo-Islamic school of architecture, can comfortably accommodate 400 people. The mosque welcomes visitors of all faiths outside prayer times, though the administrators of the mosque require visitors to be modestly attired at all times.

Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple

The Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple occupies a fairly large plot on Queen's Road East, the main thoroughfare of the Wanchai district. This temple dates back to 1901 and was constructed to meet the needs of the Sikh community in Hong Kong by the Sikh members of the British Army Regiment who were stationed in Hong Kong at that time. The temple, which was developed and expanded over subsequent years, suffered much damage during World War II but was rebuilt with the help of donations. Today this Sikh temple features a peaceful and tranquil main prayer hall, a courtyard, a dining room, a kitchen and various other rooms that are used for the wide array of classes offered by the temple, which are available to everyone. -Anjeeta Nayar
