Orto Botanico

Bologna's botanical gardens were initiated in 1568 in the Ferrerio college by the naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi. It was initially called the Orto dei Simplici because you will find simple medicines cultivated here. It was enlarged and improved for the last time in the 19th Century by the Botanist Antonio Bortoloni. Today it contains another 5000 species of vegetation distributed over an area of 20,000 meters square. There are tropical plants, gimnosperms, mediterranean plants, medicinal plants etc. and annexed to the gardens is the famous Herbarium, reputedly the largest in Europe because of its hundreds of thousands of dried plants catalogued in a computer database.

Parco Montagnola

The park is in the center of the city and it was adapted for use as a park in the 17th Century. People say that in the Napoleonic period, public events like the greasy pole and air ballooning took place here. In 1806, an architect called Gian Battistia Martinetti began to re-organize the park and created the beautiful gardens which are there today. The pool which is at the center of the park was put there by Diego Sarti in 1888. Interestingly, the park is built on some of the castle's remains at the end razed Castello di Galliera. You can see of Via Indipendenza, at the foot of the impressive staircase which leads up to the gardens.

Giocare ai Giardini Margherita

Do you love being outside? Are you looking for a quiet, safe place where you can go with your children? The Giardini Margherita is the perfect place to visit! It is situated in the city center, but far from the noise of the traffic and are generally full of Bolognese families. The gardens contain a pretty little lake which is full of gold fish and little turtles, and some "flying carpets" where you can jump like grass hoppers, a basketball court, a small car roundabout for very small children, and lots of open space where you can play ball games. There is also an gelato stall, a balloon seller and a cotton candy stall.

Parco Villa Ghigi

The ecologist and naturalist Alessandro Ghigi left this magnificent villa and its park (over 29 hectares/71 acres) to the City of Bologna. It is a delightful park, which has a beautiful little river running through it. It is located on the Bolognese hills. It is always a pleasure to spend a day amidst nature in this park, and is even better if you start looking for the hidden treasures of a city.

Parco Talon/Parco della Chiusa

The park in Casaleccio is probably the biggest in Bologna. It is a lovely park with benches, tables and barbecue areas. There are adventurous bicycle routes which go up into the hills and have marvellous views over the city. The River Reno flows across the park and you can go on boat trips or try canoeing in the river. You can go deep into the forest with the children using the well-marked "Brigoli" footpaths. The park is so large that there is a real risk that you will get lost; do not worry though, all roads lead to Bologna.

Villa Spada

This beautiful villa is neoclassical in style and was designed by the architect Giovanni Martinetti. It is located on a hill which is bordered by the Ravone river, because of this the villa has become known as Palazzo Ravone. The building was finished in 1794, and belonged to the Zambeccari marquises, and in 1849 it was chosen by the Austrian General Radetsky as quarters for Austrian troops in Italy. It was badly damaged by bombing during the war, and in the 1960s it passed into the hands of the local council. The beautiful park, in which Martinetti made a terraced Italian garden, was opened to the public in 1970, and contains many plants from distant lands.
