Cinema Paradiso is a non-profit organization and independent arthouse that showcases excellent films from around the world. With its art digital projection and comfortable stadium-style seating, the movie-watching experience is heightened. In order to make the experience more enjoyable, they offer a selection of staple movie food and beer and wine to go with it. From lighthearted stories to dark thrillers, the screening of non-conventional cinema is a tribute to this art form and the out-of-the-box movies entertain you and make you reflect at the same time. Comprising serene 60 acres (24.28 hectares), the Flamingo Gardens have an impressive collection of rare tropical plants, massive oaks, native birds and other tropical critters. The gardens are one of the region's few remaining citrus groves and are home to a large collection of wading birds. You can chug around the grounds on a narrated tram tour or explore the Wray Botanical Collection and historic Wray Home.
Dating back to 1901 and built by the “Father of Fort Lauderdale,” Stranahan House is also referred to as the Pioneer House. In 1984, this mansion was opened for public viewing as a house museum, with tens of thousands of tourists visiting this landmark annually today. Now a historic riverside museum, the elegantly restored house contains antiques, turn-of-the-century furnishings and old photographs of the area. It is also an example of classic Florida Frontier architecture, which is also seen in post offices, town hall and general stores of the city. This lovely museum can also be hired for private events and special celebrations. The events hosted here include the Pineapple Jam, the Peter Pan Pirate Party and more.
Sawgrass Recreation Park offers all kinds of nature-oriented and historic activities. Take an airboat tour of the Everglades, see a replica of an Indian village or visit the wild animal exhibit. RV camping facilities are available on the grounds. The half an hour airboat ride will take you on an insightful tour of the flora and fauna in the Everglades.
One of the largest parks in Florida, The Anne Kolb Nature Center was named after a dedicated environmentalist from the region. Part of the 1500-acre (607.02-hectare) West Lake Park, you can find a variety of birds here, like the white ibis, osprey, and peregrine falcon. Tour the mangrove wetlands by foot on raised boardwalks, by bike, or by canoe. The nature center rents bicycles, while the park's marina rents canoes and runs guided trips. Visitors can also experience a 40-minute environmental boat tour.
