Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo is spread over three floors within Forte Spagmolo. Inaugurated in 1951, the first floor is dedicated to archaeology and they have on display the skeleton of a mammoth which was excavated in 1954. They also have other artifacts dating back to the Italian and Pre Roman period and a Roman Calendar dating back to 25 AD. The first floor is dedicated to pieces of art by great Flemish and Roman artists and they mainly focus on medieval and modern art. The paintings on display dates back to as far as the 13th century and they also have wooden terracotta pieces on display.
Im grünen Tal des Fucino, ganz in der Nähe des ausgegrabenen Pfahlbaudorfes aus der Bronzezeit, befindet sich das Museumsareal, das archäologische Funde aus der Abruzzenregion beherbergt. Das moderne Gebäude, teils mit unterirdischen Ausstellungsräumen versehen, wurde über einem prähistorischen Grabhügel situiert.
