The Philharmonic Dining Rooms

A historic pub established in the 19th Century, The Philharmonic Dining Rooms stand across the street from the Philharmonic Hall. Needless to say, most of the pub's patrons are those attending concerts at the hall. Renowned throughout the city for its opulent Victorian decor, the pub interiors are simply a sight to behold. Lavish wood paneling, ornate chandeliers, Victorian wallpapers and a look reminiscent of a polished gentleman's club greets patrons. The lavishly decorated men's washroom deserves a special mention and has to be seen to be believed! On offer is a stellar selection of award-winning real ales, apart from the finest whiskeys as well as wine. The food menu goes beyond regular pub-grub, and features a full menu of British favorites, with seasonal specialties that should not be missed. The characteristic rooms are also available for private events. Check website for more.

Alma de Cuba

Alma de Cuba is perhaps one of the most unique bar and restaurants you will ever come across. That's because this trendy Latin-American watering hole is set in what was once St Peter's Catholic Church. A lot of the original design of the church still stands, like the remains of the altar, Lady's chapel and religious paintings. The active calendar of events features everything from live gigs to launch parties throughout the year. Despite the dated setting, the space is often used for contemporary events and is host to a number of shows that can best be described as glamorous. Drinking and dining at a church takes a little bit of getting used to, but Alma de Cuba remains a superb venue for a fun night in town.

The Ship & Mitre

Fashioned in the art deco style of the 1930s, The Ship & Mitre is located in the city's business district. While the interiors no longer carry the original art deco features, the nautical theme makes for an attractive and unique setting. The pub is popular for its stellar range of cask conditioned ales, having been recognized on multiple occasions by CAMRA and winning an award in 2009. The fifteen beers from various local microbreweries on tap make this a haven for beer-lovers. Also on offer is an extensive choice of bottled Belgian and American beers. The Higher Room above the pub is available for private hire. Check website for more.

Thomas Rigby's

Thomas Rigby's is a historic pub in the city that has been offering good times over the years. Chilled pitchers of beer and ale along with a decent selection of wine are provided here. The pub is situated inside an old building and the rustic decor adds to the old-world feel. Ask the barman who would happily recount anecdotes of famous people who have enjoyed a drink in its precincts.

A cocktail bar and nightclub rolled into one, Modo shows you how to have a fun night out in the city. Lavishly done up with LED lighting and luxurious booth seating, the bar attracts the city's glamor brigade. You can reserve VIP booths or complete areas for your private events. The popular cocktail menu boasts of favorites like Long Island Iced Tea and Purple Rain, as well as entire pitchers of Mai Tai and Black Russian. Check website for more.

Occupying a spectacular waterside space in the Britannia Pavilion, this glamorous bar and restaurant delights with a highly acclaimed food menu of modern British favorites and stunning views of the Albert Dock. The restaurant interiors are a superb mix of the old and new, with the stellar original features of the Grade 1 listed building forming a perfect backdrop for the stylish furnishings and contemporary lighting options.
