Freiheitsstatue

Als strahlender Leuchtturm der Freiheit dominiert die Freiheitsstatue die gleichnamige Liberty Island in New York, deren kupfergeschmiedete Form den Hafen der Stadt in seiner ganzen Pracht überragt. Der französische Aktivist Édouard René de Laboulaye drückte im Namen seiner Nation seine Solidarität mit den Vereinigten Staaten aus, unter der Voraussetzung, dass die USA beschließen sollten, ein Denkmal zu errichten, das ein Symbol ihrer Unabhängigkeit darstellen sollte. Die Freiheitsstatue war somit der schöpferische Höhepunkt des französischen Bildhauers Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi und Gustave Eiffel und wurde zu einem ehrenvollen Angebot der französischen Nation an die Vereinigten Staaten. Als Darstellung der römischen Göttin Libertas blickt sie stolz in die Ferne, ihr rechter, eine Fackel tragender Arm ist zum Himmel ausgestreckt, während ihre linke Hand eine Tafel mit der Inschrift des Datums der Unabhängigkeitserklärung der Vereinigten Staaten hält. Im Laufe der Jahre hat die Statue nicht nur eine Vielzahl von Amerikanern ein Gefühl des Stolzes vermittelt, sondern war auch ein erhabener Anblick für Zehntausende von Einwanderern, die fremde Meere bewältigten, um ein neues Leben zu beginnen.

St. Lucy's Church

Built in 1925, St. Lucy's Church was established to serve the city's Italian diaspora. The brick and stone building was constructed in the Romanesque style of architecture, but the real treasures can be found in the church interiors. Studded with awe-inspiring murals, frescoes and sculptural work, the church interiors are a spectacular affair and warrant a visit. Built in 1925, this historic church found its place in the prestigious National Register of Historic Places in the year 1998. St. Lucy's Church is the National Shrine of St. Gerard.

Prudential Center is the first of its kind in the metropolitan area of New York and New Jersey. The Madison Public Library and the James Building owes its name to D. Willis James whose generosity funded its construction. The stately structure illumined by stained-glass windows incorporates a clock tower. The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts is housed in this former library. It was established in the year 1969 and showcases thousands of artifacts that reflect the life of Americans in the bygone era. These artifacts were collected and put together by Edgar and Agnes Land. Some of the items showcased here includes hayforks, powder horns, buckets and a lot more.
