Situated in Washington Park, this memorial was established as a mark of respect for all those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. The Oregon Holocaust Resource Center became a meeting point for many survivors of the brutalities in Nazi Germany, and together they conceived the idea for a memorial that would serve as a reminder of the horrors Jews were subjected to. The memorial comprises a stone bench with wrought iron gating, situated behind a cobble-stoned area that symbolizes the town squares where Jews were gathered before being carted off to concentration camps. It vividly brings to life many of the things that had become commonplace during the Holocaust, like the shoes and personal belongings left behind in terror. You can delve into the history of the Holocaust, read quotations from those who survived, and even visit a wall on which the names of those who died are engraved.
