This groovy little bookstore in Alamo Heights buys and sells books, magazines, CDs, LPs, tapes, videos and software. Everything is sold for at least half off the list price and the sale items practically define the word "bargain." The store has three other locations, but this one has a particularly nice selection of magazines. Not to be outdone by Borders or Barnes and Noble, Half-Price Books offers seating (the floor), background music (the latest CD they purchased) and free coffee. They also work with anti-illiteracy groups, sponsor a children's summer reading program and offer a home decorating program called "Books by the Yard."
Almost hidden behind a Wendy's fast-food restaurant, this gem of a bookstore is packed with an eclectic array of books, with something to delight everyone. As it specializes in used, rare and hard-to-find editions, the most avid bibliophile could spend hours wandering among the stacks. And that's fine, since lingering is never discouraged—it could take that long just to mentally absorb the inventory!

The great cheese selection and a variety of organic products are worth checking out too.

One of the best stores around for women’s apparel and accessories, Sloan-Hall is a must-visit for anyone who is in the mood to indulge in some retail therapy. Not only are the clothes sourced from manufacturers but the store also stocks up on high-end designer wear. Besides the array of clothes, one can also shop for gift items, souvenirs, cards, apothecary items like soaps, fragrances and other grooming goods. A limited selection of gadgets and electronic items can also be bought at the shop. The owner's eye for contemporary design and taste for the unique and unusual makes clearly set the outlet apart from other retail stores.
The store isn't as dull as its name. And in fact, you won't find a hammer or nails anywhere in this store. You will find everything from contemporary drawer pulls and light fixtures to funky little knick-knacks and home decor items. The inventory is very high design and minimalist in style, with lots of stainless steel, sterling silver, textured fabrics. While most of the offerings are priced rather high, someone on a budget could still find just the right touch needed to perk up any room in the house. If you're in San Antonio during late fall, be sure to stop in and check out the Christmas selections. Last year's tin toy tree ornaments were something to see!
