Located in the heart of Denpasar, this ancient temple lies in the village of Gerenceng. It is about 800 meters to the west of the main vein running through the bustling city. The temple represents the oldest temple in the Denpasar city region. In the temple are two main shrines worthy of mention: Candi Kusuma and Candi Rengat. They are constructed from red brick and slim-lined, reminiscent of East Javanese shrines from the Majapahit era (12th-14th century AD). They function as gateways separating the inner and outer sanctums of the temple.
With an aim to provide a sanctuary and safe haven for turtles, the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre strives to shed light on the gentle creatures through a host of activities. This large complex houses theaters and galleries. Once a year it hosts The Bali Arts Festival (which runs from mid-June to mid-July). The center boasts paintings, a number of barongs and some sculptures. The main focus here are the stages: one outdoor amphitheater can seat up to 7,000. A much smaller outdoor stage, Tetaling, is the venue for more traditional village-style performances; the Wantilan is an indoor, in-the-round theater (where the audience sits on all three sides of the acting space) and the Ksriranawa stage is a proscenium stage seating 500. Performances of traditional as well as contemporary works are staged here.
This unique temple is dedicated to Sanghyang Widi. The shrine, which sits on top of the cosmic turtle and two serpents, comprises white coral. Walls are decorated with various carvings and scenes from traditional stories. Pura Jagatnatha is in frequent use and recently opened up to the public. Two major festivals held here each month celebrate the full and new moons. During the ceremonies, you get to watch frequent wayung kulit (shadow puppets) shows as well.
Etymologically speaking, Pura Payogan Agung means “large place for yoga and meditation.” Many centuries ago, Prince Dewa Agung Dalem Karna was said to have fallen into a deep trance over several days while meditating. Regaining consciousness he related a vision he had of beautiful dancing angels wearing colorful masks. Many believe that it was this vision that led to the creation of the Balinese legong dance as we see it today. Housed within the premises are numerous magical masks, as well as a semara pagulingan gamelan set, apparently the oldest of its type on the island.
