"Scenic Locale With An Interesting History"

Anne Louis Brown was renowned by her pen name Nancy Brown. An advice columnist in the early 1920s with the Detroit News, her real name was a closely guarded secret. Such was her popularity, that readers of her column would do anything she said which included coming to the opening of the Detroit Institute of Arts and attend a religious service. This neo-gothic, clock tower was erected on the behest of Nancy Brown with donations from her readers. Unveiled in 1940, this 80-footer (24.38 meters) is named in her honor. Nancy Brown Peace Carillon is an ode to peace. It was also during its unveiling, that this famous columnist revealed who she was to the massive crowd gathered. The tower at Belle Isle has seen many concerts in its past and presents a scenic spot for photographs with Lake Tacoma and Detroit River forming a lovely foreground and background.
