Established in 1928, the lavish, 1571-seat Redford Theatre has been delighting audiences ever since. Every evening at 8p, there are screenings of classic movies too. The film is preceded by an organ concert from the original organ that was put in to accompany the silent films shown when the theater was first opened. A classic Warner Brothers cartoon is also often shown before the main feature.
Launched in 1993 by an anarchist group, The Trumbullplex is a vibrant entertainment venue in Detroit. This space was a hub for art and activism back in the 1970s, and continues that legacy through to the present day. Volunteer-driven and run with donations from patrons, it hosts an array of exhibitions, theater productions, concerts and community events. This place also houses a thriving Zine Library.
Arguably metropolitan Detroit's most accomplished community theatre group, Stagecrafters operates out of the beautifully restored vintage neighborhood theatre, The Baldwin Theatre. It's located in downtown Royal Oak. On a main stage and a second stage, the group presents a variety of classic plays and musicals, with regular youth theatre performances. Organ-accompanied silent movies are also occasionally shown. It's an affordable alternative to grander theatres, and the performances are consistently good. Afterwards, you're in a great position to walk to a dining or drinking establishment on Main Street.
