Two different landscapes make the Great Walser Valley so rich in contrast. The north is characterized by softer layers of earth that slid on hard layers. In the area of the Flysch, there are a particularly large number of rivers with varied runs. The southern part of the Great Walser Valley is dominated by scree and the rugged peaks of the Northern Limestone Alps. Here fossilized shells testify to the existence of an ancient sea. This geologically interesting region is protected by UNESCO. The diversity of the Great Walser Valley is conveyed further, for example, in the flower nature trail in Faschina and the avalanche nature trail in Blons.
The Kneipp facility in the town center includes a water pedal and a barefoot path that offers therapeutic effects.
In 1493, a small Gothic church was built on the site of a former chapel in town. After the parish of Riezlern came into existence, the church underwent various major structural changes. After a baroque renovation in 1706 and a demolition in 1889, a new building was built in the neo-Romanesque style. It features Martin von Feuerstein's casein technique paintings, which are considered to be among the most beautiful in all of southern Germany.
This church was established in 1605 just outside the city walls. During a tumultuous recatholization attempt in 1622, the head of the monastery, Fidelis von Sigmaringen, was slain by the reformed population despite military protection; Benedict XIV beatified him. A few monks still live in the monastery today.
The parish church of St. Jodok, which has existed since 1390, acquired its current form over 300 years ago, when the sacristy and the gallery were added. Its tower is considered the icon of Mittelberg and was built over 40 years. Also worth seeing are the late Gothic frescoes from 1470, the baptismal font from 1495 which is in the form of an octagonal chalice, and the late Gothic relief busts.
