Laytown is located along the Irish sea coast and is believed to have existed since at least the 6th Century CE. This sea-side village is characterized by its spectacular beaches, beach front views and the Laytown Strand races which attract a large number of tourists every year. These races command a special status as they are the only races in Europe to be run on a beach under the Turf Club rules. Apart from indulging in beach related activities, visitors can also participate in nature trails and river walks organized by the Sonairte Ecology Centre. Visitors interested in historical architecture would find the Church of the Sacred Heart and the 19th Century terraced beach front houses intriguing.
