"Destroyed Beauty"

Dating back to the Anglo-Saxon era, Ruthwell Cross is located in the former region of Northumbria, which falls under Scotland now. The cross belongs to the 8th Century during which time, Ruthwell was considered to be a part of Northumbria. Known to be one of the most famous Anglo-Saxon monuments, it is probably the oldest specimens of English text that translates into poetry. Unfortunately, a huge part of the cross was destroyed during the 16th Century when the monument was demolished by the Presbyterian iconoclasts. However, restoration works have preserved the remnants beautifully.
