"An Encounter With Albatross"
Situated amid the lush grasslands of Taiaroa Head, the center is uniquely positioned to grant visitors a rare opportunity to observe the majestic Royal Albatross in its natural environment. Jutting into the South Pacific Ocean, the Otago Peninsula is the only mainland albatross breeding ground anywhere in the world. Close to 200 albatross reside on the headland alongside 20 other species like the Southern Fur Seal and Spotted Shag. The observatory is just a short walk away from the main center, and promises a spellbinding view of the birds as they mingle, mate and raise their young. Here, the sound of crashing waves intermingles with the call of the albatross; nature's music carried upon the whispering wind. The landscape itself is sight to behold, with its wind-swept grasslands and jagged rocks drenched in the ocean's salty spray. Tours of the headland and observatory generally begin at the center where visitors are acquainted with the region's heritage, both cultural and natural. Visitors are also welcome to tour the McMillan Gallery and dine at the cafe.
