Located close to the scenic San Juan Skyway and with views of the majestic and mighty mountains, the park is blessed with a forest of Ponderosa pines that overlooks a picturesque lake. The hiking and biking trails within the woods provide plenty of opportunities to admire the local wildlife that includes deer, fox, and the rarer elk and coyote. Fort Lewis College offers its students several facilities. For athletics, besides the pool, fields and various courts, the college also has the Whalen Gymnasium. The college's volleyball and basketball teams use the Gymnasium for their games.
Set in the historic, Mission-style Smiley Building, the Smiley Theater is touted to be the biggest of its kind in the city. This energy efficient structure was lovingly renovated by John Shaw, Charles Shaw and Lisa Bodwalk and is used for a range of activities. Homeground of the Skyhawks Basketball Women's team, the Ray Dennison Memorial Field is located at the Fort Lewis College. The stadium was named to commemorate Fort Lewis' ex-football player Ray Dennison, who tragically died owing to a fatal head injury during a game in 1955. The west area of the stadium can accommodate anywhere between 4000 to 6000 people, and also features a special press box reserved for media and other key game staff.
