Durban Botanic Gardens are regarded by many as some of South Africa's most beautiful city park lands. In 1850, the original curator, Mr. Mark Johnson McKen, laid the groundwork for what it is today. Specialties include the Earnest Thorpe Orchid House, a Herb Garden, a Sunken Garden and the Garden for the Blind. There is an information center and a tea garden. There are live concerts held in the park regularly, throughout the year, and audiences are welcome to bring along a picnic basket. Multiple concerts take place in the hall and the event spaces in the gardens. Workshops and exhibitions are also held.
Established in 1994, the Durban International Convention Centre is one of the best and biggest convention centers in the country. Opened by legendary president Nelson Mandela, the center has played host to many significant national and international events. It comprises an exhibition center, meeting spaces, a sports arena, and convention spaces. The International AIDS Conference 2000, FIFA World Cup draw 2010, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 1999, and COP17 2011 are some of the past events that have been held here. Garnered with lavish accolades owing to its excellent facilities, the convention center has won many prestigious awards like the Africa's Leading Meetings and Conference Centre by World Travel Awards, International Association of Congress Centres's World's Top 15 Congress Centres, and a five star grade by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.
