The Playhouse

Built during the 1920's in Tudor Revival style, Playhouse was taken over by the Performing Arts Council in the 1980's. The Company's mission is to provide cultural education and entertainment in both an African and international context. Within the complex there are several theaters which house a variety of productions simultaneously. Alongside the production and performance work of its Drama and Dance departments, the Company's Education and Development department has an active program, presenting mobile theater to schools. Inquire at the Tourist Junction about guided tours of the Playhouse. Call for performance schedule.

Moses Mabhida Stadium

This stadium, named after the former General Secretary of the South African Communist Party, was constructed in the Durban sports precinct for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Its unique design allows it to both expand to 80,000-person capacity and reduce to hold 54,000 people. The modern structure includes a large arch which symbolizes the country's struggles and unification.

Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre

Established in 1994, the Durban International Convention Centre is one of the best and biggest convention centers in the country. Opened by legendary president Nelson Mandela, the center has played host to many significant national and international events. It comprises an exhibition center, meeting spaces, a sports arena, and convention spaces. The International AIDS Conference 2000, FIFA World Cup draw 2010, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 1999, and COP17 2011 are some of the past events that have been held here. Garnered with lavish accolades owing to its excellent facilities, the convention center has won many prestigious awards like the Africa's Leading Meetings and Conference Centre by World Travel Awards, International Association of Congress Centres's World's Top 15 Congress Centres, and a five star grade by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.

The Durban International Convention Centre

Built to accommodate the crowds for the FIFA World Cup in 2010, the Durban Arena makes up part of the International Convention Centre (ICC). With seating for up to 10000 people, this state-of-the-art facility that plays host to a number of big name, international artists. The flexible design allows for easy adaptation for sports events and for concerts and other cultural events.

Catalina Theatre

This theater was created to showcase the talents of Durban's playwrights, musicians, and poets. A variety of shows are offered, from musical theater to drama, poetry, and comedy. Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre

The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre houses an audience of up to 400 with comfortable stadium-style seating. Before or after the performances, you can check out the tavern or the coffee shop which are attached to the building. The company was founded by University of KwaZulu-Natal Professor Elizabeth Sneddon, and was the first theater in the area to service the drama department of a university. The EST hosts about 17 productions a year.
