This museum is on the corner of West and Aliwal, behind the city hall. It has various galleries taking a look back at 'how things were' in the early days of Natal - costumes, buildings, and interactive displays. It also provides an illustration of Zululand and its history. The model of a Zulu warrior is particularly striking. The museum is housed in the building of the old courthouse (1863) and has been declared a National Monument. The shop has an interesting range of old photos.

The KZN Philharmonic holds various annual events, including the Music at the Lake, a series of light classical evenings held in the early spring and summer evenings, in the lovely botanical gardens. The NBS Sunset Proms are held throughout the year, and look out for the "Stars and Stripes" evening of U.S. music around July 4th. These are held at the Kingsmead Cricket grounds. The Opera Theatre in Durban is an extremely prestigious theater, where world class operas take place. The theater's architecture, its decor and ambiance reflect the Elizabethan style. The venue can accommodate over 1,000 people with its plush seating and massive space. The Dick King Statue is an equestrian sculpture of Richard Philip King aka Dick King with his horse Somerset, which is made up of bronze. It commemorates King's participation and struggles for when he rode from Durban to Grahamstown in just 10 days during Durban's siege where he helped save Port Natal in 1842.
