Cypress and poplar trees sway gently in wind, with the clear water of Lake Phelps lapping at their sides. This is one of the most common sites at Pettigrew State Park as you take your canoe, kayak, or rowboat to explore the lake's serene territory. Anglers know of the lake's legendary status for providing amazing catches of large-mouth bass. Take a hike or ride a bicycle into the well-established trails, as woodland creatures scurry about the tall, towering trees. In a forest of cypress and pink-hued sweetgum trees, campgrounds have been set up to provide amazing natural sights. Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula in North Carolina. Established in 1963, the refuge encompasses an area of 110,106 acres (44,558 hectares). Here, visitors can partake in a variety of recreational activities like hunting, hiking, and biking. The Pocosin lakes offer excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. If you are into war history and Civil War intrigues you, then the Port O' Plymouth Museum must be a part of your itinerary when visiting Plymouth. Nestled in a 1923 train depot, it tells you the story of not only the town bur also the county during the Civil War. Their impressive collection is considered to be among the largest North and South Carolinas. Check the replica of the CSS Albemarle and other themed exhibits. Besides permanent displays, they also have rotating exhibits. Small but well-curated, it will make any Civil War historian proud.
Built in 1767, The Chowan County Courthouse is a wonderful specimen of 18th-century Georgian architecture with sloped roofs, tall windows, a centrally positioned clock tower, and arched entrances. Once the seat of the county of Chowan, this heritage structure was designated as a National Historic Landmark in the year 1970. The courthouse is open to the public for tours.
The 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse was first activated around 1866. The lighthouse minded the ships sailing along the Roanoke River. After being deactivated as a lighthouse around 1941, it was restored by the local historical society. Tour around to find the furniture and the interior of the place, resembling to its former appearance and also know more about the cruising history of the period.
This modestly-sized auditorium is part of the local high school and hosts basketball games and the occasional concert.
