Although Presque Isle State Park almost looks like an island, it is actually a long, narrow peninsula. In fact, the phrase “Presque Isle” means “almost an island” in French. Joined by a very narrow strip to the mainland, it protrudes into Lake Erie, which lies between United States and Canada. From the air, the entire peninsula appears like someone's hand: green, swirling landforms amid the ultramarine blue ocean. Two towering lighthouses gleam in the light of the setting sun. There are scenic trails for hiking and cycling, tranquil birdwatching spots, a beautiful marina and 13 picturesque beaches. Swimming, scuba diving, boating, fishing and water skiing are popular activities. Hunting waterfowl and deer is permitted, but strict rules apply. Iceboating, ice fishing and cross-country skiing are some of the winter sports here. This park is home to diverse plants, birds, fish, crustaceans, amphibians and reptiles. The Tom Ridge Environmental Center at the park entrance houses a discovery center, aquariums, classrooms, laboratories and exhibition halls.
