Found in the village of Cothelstone, the Cothelstone Manor was originally constructed in the 16th Century. The lands were gifted to Sir Adam de Coveston by William the Conqueror after which a mansion has occupied the site at all points of time. The Stawell family owned the house for centuries, until 1646 when Oliver Cromwell imprisoned John Stawell for treason and ordered the mansion to be destroyed. Subsequent generations lived in a significantly smaller, repaired mansion. The Jeffries purchased it in 1791 and only in 1855 was the manor restored to its former glory, rebuilt in the pre-Civil war style of the Stewalls. It now offers a luxury bed and breakfast to holidaymakers and is also a wedding venue and a filming location.
