This oddly-named restaurant and bar features affordable Caribbean cuisine. The interior of What's Up is reminiscent of an authentic African chop-bar with bright blue walls, slightly rickety furniture and a large loud television. The menu features appetizers such as salt fish cakes and salads and main course items include Calypso steak, curries of beef, chicken and goat, jerk chicken and something called 'Legs from Heaven.' Portions are generous and entrees include piles of rice or yams.
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. Western Coffee Shop is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!
