The Broken City

This popular nightclub and bar hosts the city's up-and-coming bands with live music every night. You can also enjoy great food while you watch the bands performing live; the restaurant opens early to host breakfast and lunch, and is always willing to pour a drink. Choose from an excellent food menu of pub favorites and a spirit list to keep the night rocking. If you're hoping to find the next big band and soak up some local culture at the same time, drop into The Broken City where you're sure to do both.

Commonwealth Bar & Stage

Nestled in Eau Claire in Calgary, Commonwealth Bar & Stage is a premier nightlife destination for the people residing in Calgary. An old warehouse which was turned into a twin-level night club, it offers an ultimate experience with popular DJs who turn up the heat by playing some heart throbbing tracks. After shaking your leg on the groovy rap, electronic, hip hop and inde rock tunes, one can relish the range of food items served at this venue. The nights are themed with music played both upstairs and downstairs. The ambiance is electric and takes you into a different dimension.

Ranchman's

Consistently voted among the top country clubs in the country, Ranchman's is a south Calgary favorite that has been packing people in for generations, particularly during the wild annual Calgary Stampede. While other clubs purport to be country, this is the real deal, with strapping young men pulling in by truck at night from the ranches that litter the land surrounding Calgary. The rodeo crowd also hangs out here when in town. There's live music in the dance hall section and a DJ in the bar up front, as well as on the outdoor patio. The attached restaurant serves steaks and burgers.

Ship & Anchor Pub

A traditional English pub in the heart of the city, Ship and Anchor attracts a heady mix of clientele from students and professionals to locals and expatriates, and it's not without a good reason. The pub has an excellent roster of live bands, jam sessions, karaoke nights as well as other special events like the Annual Limericks contest and the Music Festival. The amazingly diverse selection of beer including a good number of local brews has something for everyone while the homely food on offer is a satisfying affair. Games are broadcast live on the big screen for sports enthusiasts. For an airier setting, settle down on the breezy patio. Jam sessions draw a host of talent who perform solo or with a backup. Also check out the fun mix of cocktails, hang out and shoot the breeze!

Dickens

If great drinks coupled with rocking live music is your idea of a fun night out, you needn't look beyond Dickens. The popular pub on 9th Avenue has an excellent schedule of live music and hosts an array of local as well as renowned bands. The regular DJ events also have a lot of takers and attracts a fairly young crowd. Food menu has an excellent selection of pub fare while the sip list has enough spirits to keep the night rocking. Nightly promotions and happy hour specials promise great deals on the party fuel. In sharp contrast to the rest of the week, Sundays at Dickens are a delightfully relaxed affair, with patrons dropping in to play a host of board games and socialize over a pint.

Rose & Crown

One of the first attempts at capturing the look, feel and sensibilities of a small village country pub in the UK, this stop has remained popular for more than 15 years. Located just a few blocks south of downtown in a rambling old building (legend has it as a former funeral home), there are three distinct bar areas with booths and tables. There are also comfy couches, some near fireplaces. Come summer, there's also a heated patio area. There are some 30 beers, many of them imported. The menu tilts towards finger foods, burgers and sandwiches.
