The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge is an engineering marvel and kids and families can enjoy watching the bridge as it ascends and descends as ships pass under it, a great example of a lift bridge. The bridge spanning the Cape Cod Canal is the main connector between Cape Cod and the mainland for railway traffic. Construction of the bridge started in 1933 and upon its completion in 1935 it held the record of being the longest vertical lift span of its time at 544 feet. Visitors can also relax and spend time exploring the Buzzards Bay Park along the canal and several bike paths along the waterfront offers a nice way to spend an afternoon.
Johnny Kelley Park in the heart of Dennis is a well-maintained recreational area featuring a playground, picnic areas and slides that cater to toddlers as young as 3 years and kids aged between 5 and 10. With a number of tennis and basketball courts on-site, Johnny Kelley hosts a number of local league games. Workout and walking trails inside the park attract a number of fitness enthusiasts here.
Replete with diverse ecosystems and habitats which contribute to its rich ecology, Ellisville Harbor State Park invites visitors to unwind and relax amid tranquil surrounds. You can frolic on pebbled shores, try your hand at fishing, or venture into the wilderness and uncover all that lies within. Keep your eyes peeled for harbor seals if you happen to visit during the colder months. Delightful sights abound here, with the park endowed with scenic natural beauty, which awes nature lovers. Cross-country skiing is a popular activity in the winters.
The scenic Goodwill Park is claimed to be one the best spots for outdoor activities. This conserved forest area, is composed of sprawling woods and lakes, that make up a chunk of the regions natural cover. Popular amongst nature lovers and outdoor enthusiast, several activities are conducted at this park throughout the year. Wooded trails make excellent hiking and biking routes, while its designated campgrounds feature volleyball courts, horseshoes and barbecue facilities. Kayaking, canoeing, sport fishing and other water sports are prevalent on its lakes.
Although referred to as a bike trail, this paved path also welcomes walking, running, horseback riding and rollerblading. Built on an old railway bed, the scenic 25-mile (40-kilometer) trail takes you from Yarmouth to Dennis to Wellfleet via cranberry bogs, lakes and towns. Nickerson State Park, off Route 6A in Brewster, maintains the trail and is at the halfway point.
Guv Fuller Field in Falmouth is a lovely park with a baseball field that bustles with baseball fans on the Cape during the summer months. The Arnie Allan Diamond in the field is where the Falmouth Commodores (Cape Cod Baseball League) play during June and July each year.
