La Coppola Storta (The Twisted, or Tilted, Cap) is a women's cooperative in the village of San Giuseppe Iato, of the Palermo District, that carefully handcrafts the most traditional Sicilian hats. The coppola hat spread over Sicily in the middle of 19th Century and soon became one of the symbols of the island, but its image is also associated with the dark iconography of the mafia man, who used to wear it tilted (or storta). The cooperative was born with the aim to emancipate San Giuseppe’s women and to redeem and reinvent the coppola, handcrafted in every size and version: for men, women, babies and grown-ups, and even pets. Traditionally made of tweed, velvet, satin, or organdy, other than the hats, there are also collectible items hand-painted by young artists.
