Cycle Scotland

Cycle Scotland allows you to explore and escape, whilst keeping you very fit in the process, as Edinburgh has its fair share of hilly streets. There are quality mountain, city and hybrid bikes to hire, you can take them for a half day, full day or a weekly rental. Pick up accessories such as panniers and racks to help you get away into the hills. There are a number of organized trips available including: West Coast Wilderness and Island, Sacred Sites and Secret Places, and Royal Deeside Castles and Whisky Trail.

Saint Giles' Cathedral

An outstanding exemplar of Gothic architecture, this cathedral looms large above Edinburgh's Old Town, calling attention with its grand crown steeple. The church is steeped in a long and storied history that began nearly a millennia ago. Although there has been a church on this site since 1854, the earliest remains to be found in St Giles' Cathedral are four pillars which date from about 1120. In 1385 the church was destroyed by an English army but soon afterward rebuilt in greater splendor. In 1460 the roof was raised and the main body of the church extended eastwards. The intricate spire was completed in 1495 and St Giles' was declared a Presbyterian cathedral. The Chapel of the Knights of the Thistle, built in 1911 for the Order of the Thistle, is particularly beautiful: each Knight's stall is carved in wood with an impressively intricate touch.

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

Perched on top of the Royal Mile, Camera Obscura is the place to 'see' Edinburgh - however not necessarily by looking at the views! Instead, visitors look at a white disk in the middle of a darkened room onto which the surrounding area is projected (including all the innocent and oblivious passers-by). There's a voyeuristic air amongst the viewers, as they hover around the images, chuckling as people and things are singled out for scrutiny, all good fun. There is also an impressive hologram exhibition, which is well worth a look. For the traditionalists, a fine view of the city can be found without refraction contraptions, at the very top of the building. Do be warned, however, as both the view from the roof and the view from the camera are dependent on natural light, dark clouds and general fogginess will give rise to disappointment for gawkers.

The gallery's collection of Scottish artwork is especially extensive and well-curated. The neoclassical museum building is a work of art in itself. Admission is usually free, however a fee may apply for access to special exhibitions. As the home of the Scottish national collection of fine art, the Scottish National Gallery grants access to one of the world's foremost fine art collections.

The Royal Scottish Academy

The Royal Scottish Academy, an imposing neo-classical structure, was designed by William Playfair in the 1830s. Originally the home of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Society, the Royal Scottish Academy took over residence in 1911. Today, in early summer and midwinter, it holds exhibitions of contemporary Scottish work. The Royal Scottish Society of Watercolourists, the Society of Scottish artists and the Academy itself are frequent contributors. Student art is also often exhibited. RSA also presents exciting multi-media programs featuring the latest in film, video, digital and sound works.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

The collection at National Portrait Gallery traces the history of Scotland through the portraiture of its pioneers, poets, philosophers, rebels and royalty. There is the chance to stare into the faces and see eye to eye with Bonny Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots. Scotland's modern-day media monarchs and heroes are immortalized in portraits of novelist Irvine Welsh, dancer Moira Shearer, fashion-guru Jean Muir and footballer Danny McGrain amongst others. Also represented are works of some international greats, including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Rodin. Contemporary art is exhibited alongside a growing National Photography Collection that includes the ground breaking work of Hill and Adamson.

Castillo de Edimburgo

Perched at the craggy edge of Castle Rock, the world-renowned Edinburgh Castle, with its brooding grey fortification, was once the military centerpiece of the British army in Scotland. Along with fulfilling its duties as a wartime fortress, it was also the residence of King Malcolm Canmore and Queen Margaret in the 11th Century. Within its dark grey walls and even beyond them, the Edinburgh Castle is home to some of the most marvelous relics of Scottish history, meriting it one of the most popular paid-attractions in the world. The oldest monument atop the volcanic Castle Rock promontory is St Margaret's Chapel, beside which Mons Meg, a colossal siege gun dating back to the 15th Century stands in historic pride. At the heart of the castle's main complex, one can almost hear the deafening silence of the Great Hall, the erstwhile site for several royal ceremonies and the place of congregation for the Scottish Parliament. A little further toward the east, the Royal Palace proudly displays the sparkling crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny. Together with its remarkable past and beautifully preserved elements of history, both Castle Rock and the Edinburgh Castle form solid units of Scotland's royal and political heritage.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

Conspiracies, plots and other dramatic turns in Scottish history were the scenes played out at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Established as the monarchical residence for the kings and queens of Scots more than six centuries ago, it is now the Queen's formal residence in Scotland. Built on the ruins of a medieval abbey, this elegant, quadrangular complex was built in the 16th Century with added extensions in the following century. Intriguing stories abound in its state apartments that give a glimpse into the life of its famous residents like Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and George IV. The Great Gallery displays fascinating exhibitions from the Royal Collection, while the expansive, beautiful gardens add further charm to this regal castle.

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

This building was designed by William Burn in the 1820s in the neoclassical style for the John Watson School. Since 1984, the National Gallery of Modern Art has housed a magnificent art collection of which the city is justly proud. On the ground floor there are special exhibition rooms and displays from the permanent collection. Here you'll find American Pop Art, the Glasgow Boys, Rennie Mackintosh watercolors and one small room devoted to works by Ian Hamilton Finlay. The upper level features an impressive collection of early 20th-century international art, representing Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse, Kirchner, Magritte, Picasso and Miro amongst others. The surrounding parkland contains sculpture by the likes of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, William Turnbull and Anthony Caro. Calm down from the high-brow glory of it all in the cafe downstairs, or in the well-stocked museum shop.

Edinburgh Zoo

All the old favorites are here: Asiatic lions, South American monkeys, zebras, funky little marmosets and tamarins - this is a sure-fire hit for children and adults alike. The jewel in Edinburgh Zoo's crown has to be the penguins, who make a regular parade outside their enclosure when weather permits. Or they can be viewed swimming underwater in the world's biggest penguin pool. You can also arrange to handle the smaller animals (such as snails, rats and snakes) or to take a safari ride in an open-sided trailer. Take the opportunity to meet some of the keepers and learn about the more exotic and endangered inhabitants here. There's a great little gift shop with lots of affordable goodies, and a handy coffee shop/restaurant.
