Tokyo's Cotton Club, an offshoot of the legendary Cotton Club in New York, hosts the creme de la creme of jazz talent - Martha Reeves, Lena Horne, Delfonics; these are just some of the huge names that have played to Cotton Club's crowd of passionate jazz fans. Tickets aren't cheap but tickets for the best rarely are; reservations are recommended. Opening times vary according to programming.

Members of the Kyoto Jazz Massive own this little club, and it attracts top quality DJs, who will often try out new sets here. The atmosphere is intimate, the music a mix of jazz, break beats and house; the sound quality makes the Room well worth a visit.

Unit is a great place to spend the night. You can start in the lounge area, grabbing a bite or a drink, then catch a live show, either local or with solid international talent. Afterwards, you can groove to some of Tokyo's and the world's best DJs. Made up of various spaces of varying sizes, Unit really is a good bet on most nights. While not the biggest club in Tokyo by a long shot, what Unit lacks in size it more than makes up for in high quality. Unit knows what it's doing across the board, from indie, to reggae and beyond-and frankly, you could do a lot worse than just popping in to 'have a look-see'.

Tucked away in the back streets of Shibuya, Club Harlem offers Shibuya's best venue for fans of Hip Hop and Japanese hip hop alike. Onlookers can expect multiple floors of club action in the forms of a DJ based dance room, a stage for live performances, and bar/lounge spaces. The crowd is young, so if you're over 30 and not into the subculture, you might feel out of place. It also helps to have a female in your group, as the doormen are notorious for denying entry to groups of all male foreigners. ID is required, under 18 not allowed.

Although there is always an entry fee, it is definitely worth it, considering the service and kind of drinks you get. Various rock bands perform at the club over the weekends.
