Belying the modest façade of this Romanesque-Gothic church is a collection of Gothic frescoes and impressive architecture. The first, and formerly the only, parish church of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Old Parish Church of St. Martin is also the mother church of the Isar valley. Upon entering this sacred establishment, visitors are lead into a vaulted gallery, which further leads to the nave. When in the nave, visitors are left marveling at the original Romanesque windows and the historic murals, which only add to the charm of this old-world church.
Tucked away in the heart of Partenkirchen, Ludwigstraße is an iconic street. This Alpine attraction is dotted with several quaint shops and quintessential Bavarian inns. On a stroll down this legendary street, visitors can marvel at the ornate façades of the many traditional homes and witness Bavarian culture come alive. Designed by Johann Georg Fischer in 1749, the Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche is located at the corner of Spitalgasse and Lechhalde. The charming church was built over the site of an older Gothic Church which was burnt to the ground in 1743. Dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the structure sports a pretty Rococo facade and is quite famous for its frescoes and the lovely altar paintings within. Although the exterior is bright red, the interiors take on subtle tones, which make the altars and relics even lovelier to look at.
