Across the street from Sony Studios, Backstage is not your typical dive bar. Wood paneling and a fireplace highlight the ski chalet décor, friendly and attractive bartenders abound, and Misti's Kitchen (on premises) churns out sinful Mac & Cheese, huge burgers, salads and steaks, and was voted best bar food in the city. Weeknights usually feature karaoke and it's a great spot for a birthday or other party any night of the week. Of course there are six TVs and a pool table, but you might just have so much fun that you do not even notice them. Check website for events.
Located on a busy stretch of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, this perky sun-soaked café is definitely for the lovers of hustle and bustle and outdoor repast. The huge patio opens onto the loud and busy boulevard. The interior is likewise bright and cheery as glass walls let in a lot of sunlight, making this space a perfect lunch venue. The menu is enormous to a fault, requiring some time and patience to rifle through. Making your first visit on a leisurely, unrushed occasion may be circumspect, especially as the service, albeit friendly, may be unhurried at times. The pride and joy of Aroma are the baked goods. Their bagels, croissants and pastries are touted as the bee's knees, second to none. -Kate Sobol
With more than 200 kinds of vodka, this Russian themed bar is the ultimate destination for vodka lovers. The ambiance is buzzing with foot tapping music and a dive bar styled decor. Try the cucumber gimlet and check out the Red Room in the back where you can get your groove on with DJs spinning your favorite dance numbers. There is an interesting line up of local bands and artists that perform live throughout the year. Note: Entry only for people above 21 years of age.
From the bizarre name of Genghis Cohen, you'd think this was an Asian kosher delicatessen. You'd be wrong. The menu is strictly Chinese (besides the coleslaw & pickles) and it's good. The crowd is a mix of those who come for the Szechuan pork, and younger music types who'll either perform or patronize the acoustic music room that's just off the entrance. Although it depend on who's playing, you can usually get into the music room with a nominal fee. Come for the food, but stay for the music.
