Atara's Hebrew Book and Gift Center is a small but very eclectic bookstore on Fairfax. It offers a diverse collection of literary titles all in the Hebrew language. The store also features Israeli novelties, jewelry and decorations. Be forewarned, however, that if the store is crowded, walking around can be a bit of a challenge. Just chalk it up under atmosphere. Plus with a location in the center of the Fairfax district, it is a great stop while experiencing the culture.

They sell everything Italian, from sausage and meats to all the cheeses (buffalo mozzarrella, provolone, ricotta, mascarpone). They sell some great dried pastas in unusual shapes and canned sauces. For those who make their own sauce, they sell all the necessary ingredients, from canned tomatoes to olive oil and herbs. Grab some sweets too, like a bag of authentic biscotti or freshly made cannoli. There are several other locations, including West Covina, San Gabriel, and Arcadia.

As the Record Turns

There's a real gramophone in the window of this little place, As the Record Turns, that will bring back memories for many lovers of vinyl records. The ambiance of this place is rather upscale; with its marble floor and Oakwood cabinets, it looks like a private room in a very wealthy person's mansion. Whether you love R&B, jazz, rock, soundtracks or specialty records by various personalities, you should be able to find what you're looking for here. The makers of more than 3,000 films have contacted this store while searching for copies of special records that have become hard to find over the years. Nearly 25,000 records are on hand here, and all are in excellent condition. The personal assistants of such well known figures as George Lucas, Henry Rollins and George Harrison have ordered records from this store on behalf of their employers. MTV, Sony and AMC have all called here looking for records. Even Jay Leno's 'Tonight Show' staff calls here when a special recording is needed. Call for open hours.
