A splending war memorial, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is built in honor of the men who lost their lives fighting in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Civil War. Built in 1887, the monument stands tall at 112 feet (34 meters) and can be seen from most places in the city. The bronze cast monument not only features 87 steps to the top and an observatory but there is also an Angel of Peace statue on the top of the monument.

The spacious green is bordered by Park, Broad, Whitfield and Boston Streets, near the Christ Episcopal Church of Guilford.
