Located in Napa Valley, the rich and fertile volcanic soil has helped the wine makers in this region to grow and produce some of the best wines in the world. The terrain is rocky and rough, but the journey for the wine industry here has been very smooth. Hartwell offers tours and tastings for visitors who can taste the rich wines produced here. Some of the signature wines are Estate Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Miste' Hill and Sauvignon Blanc.
With the trees that usually grow here you'd probably expect the name to be Smith-Douglas Fir or Smith-Poison Oak, but the owner decided Smith-Madrone had a better ring to it! The Smith-Madrone Vineyard and winery was started in 1971 by Stuart Smith. All wines produced here are made indigenously from the choicest of grapes grown on the estate. The estate produces a fine collection of Riesling, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. You can have a tour of the beautiful estate and join their wine tasting sessions by making an appointment.
Bordeaux and Chardonnay acres line the property of White Rock Vineyards. The underground winery also ages and stores the wines, the temperature and humidity being perfect catalysts. The wines are well-priced, especially the Claret, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The winery doesn't have wine tours but call ahead and the owners might show you around the estate.
The Petaluma Wildlife & Natural Science Museum has a huge collection of taxidermied animals as well as live animals, and is open to the public every Saturday. The property also includes an aviary, dioramas, and a fossil and mineral collection.
