The Rancho San Pedro is the site of the First Spanish land grant in California. It encompasses 75,000 acres (30,351 hectares) of land, which included the entire Los Angeles harbor. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 28, 1976.
The Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve is an immaculate estuary that also doubles up as one of the best bird-watching spots in North America. Home to more than 30,000 migratory birds during the winter, these coastal wetlands are also inhabited by some sensitive species such as the California Gnatcatcher and the Burrowing Owl. The preserve is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, and you can enjoy activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, or bird watching. Within its premises, the nature preserve houses the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center where you can gain some more information about the estuary through interesting exhibits and displays.
Oso Viejo Community Park is a favorite destination for families in Mission Viejo. The park features multiple playstructures, tunnels, swingsets and picnic areas for the kids to monkey around on. The park also has many other features including a waterfall, statues, chess tables and bocci ball courts. Don't miss out on the opportunity to take a peaceful walk on the Oso Creek Trail which originates in the park, and catch some of the local fauna as well as a hedge maze!
C Russell Cook Park (Cook Park) is a small but pleasant park in San Juan Capistrano. The park has various features including a baseball diamond, play structures, picnic and barbecue areas and a basketball court. The park also contains the trailhead for the Dana Hills Loop Trail, which takes you past wildflowers and local neighborhoods to a breathtaking 360 degree panorama view at the top.
Historical Society of Long Beach is located in the Bixby Knolls district and is the place to be for anyone interested in the history and culture of the city and region. Their collection of more than 100,000 items includes ancient documents, maps, photographs, clothing, uniforms, books, and much more that date back to the 19th century. Their ever changing exhibits are very interesting and showcase their own collections as well as visiting collections. History buffs should not miss a visit to the Historical Society of Long Beach when in the city.
The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum is an amazing house museum that was occupied by the Workman and the Temple family ages ago. The mansion consists of a beautiful patio that is centered by a huge fountain. The tiled roofs and shaded grapevine walkways is a great example of the site being well maintained and preserved. The museum provides a glimpse into California's past. The only way to visit this attraction is through the guided tours that are offered every Wednesday through Sunday from 1 Pm to 3 Pm and the La Casa Nueva from 2 Pm to 4 Pm. They also conduct group, private and tours for children.
