Unlike many of the curry houses in Oxford, the Standard is not ashamed of being a traditional Indian restaurant. As a result, it throws itself into being just what it is with gusto. The wallpaper here is enough to turn anyone's head but gives the place a charm that is unique to the city. Indian music plays unobtrusively in the background, and the food is marvelous as well as cheap. The rogan dishes are replete with succulent tomatoes and are definitely worth trying, and the tandoori mixed grill is also a favorite with regular diners.
Branca is one of the most spacious restaurants as it can hold over 100 people comfortably. With round tables and red-seated chairs, this restaurant possesses a chic décor and a relaxed atmosphere. Pizzas and pasta are available in plenty. For dessert, Pannacotta with raspberries, Strawberry Coppa or any other puddings would do just fine. The drinks served here are quite reasonable price-wise, while the service is fairly good. This restaurant also serves as a venue for children parties. A great place to grab a quick bite.
Opposite the Phoenix Picture Palace, Jericho Cafe, a 100 seat restaurant which is fully licensed and is a good place to grab a pizza or snack before a film, but also perfect for longer evenings savoring more substantial dishes. Upstairs is really for breakfast and coffees, but downstairs is a restaurant that will appeal to groups and couples alike. The decor is simple - modern chairs and tables upstairs, giving way to wooden tables downstairs. The upstairs section has a long bar/counter which somehow gives the place a young, slightly American feel. The food ranges from short breads to steak and excels on all fronts. Jericho Cafe is perfect for a light snack and coffee and a real treat for dinner: the portions are generous and superbly prepared.
Café Rouge is part of a restaurant chain which, despite the formula, manages to retain the authenticity of basic French cuisine. Simple, wooden tables predominate and set a very relaxed tone. The place has an airy café feel, and many people come here for afternoon coffee. The food is of a very high quality, and the lunchtime set menu is a popular bargain. The vegetarian selection is generous, but the fish is the real specialty here.
Established in the year 1992 by Oxford undergraduates, Davis Roberts and George Stroup, G&D's ice-cream cafe is a tiny ice-cream parlor located in Oxford's bustling Little Clarendon street. There are a few ice-cream cafes in Oxford that serve freshly made ice-cream and G&D's is one of them. Do savor its Oxford Blue Berry favor as it comes stuffed with mouth-watering blueberries. Apart from ice-cream, the cafe also serves lip-smacking bagels.
George and Davis is an ice cream lover's dream come true. At almost any time of day or night, you can choose from a range of natural ice creams made on the premises—either take away a cone or sit down to eat. The style is American, and the atmosphere is lively, with high tables giving a real diner feel. The ice cream is the main attraction, but G&D's also serves hot and cold filled bagels, sandwiches and a good cup of coffee.
