Scala Santa Maria del Monte (Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte) also sometimes called the Ladder of St. James is a monumental, four centuries old, 142 ceramic stairway. Each tile is uniquely handcrafted with mosaics and draws influences from various styles such as the Arabic, Spanish, Swabian, Renaissance and Baroque. Beautiful at any time during the year, it connects the lower town to the old town which is above and leads straight to the Santa Maria del Monte Church. But it is during the Scala Infiorata (Scala Flower Festival) and patron saints festivals, that it becomes an ever more impressive sight to see. Decorated in various flower patterns and designs, candles taking the form of local patron saints or any local theme, the steps are just breathtaking to behold.
