Explore any of the University of Split's departments and you will find the brightest minds at work. Since the university was founded in 1974, it has grown to include an Academy of Art, School of Economics, law, as well as an array of science and technology campuses. Located right outside of Diocletian's Palace, the university is situated in the heart of Split.
The Pjaca is a square is for the people, represents the fine citizenry of Split, earning the name "People's Square". Here, you will find the Town Hall, today used as an exhibition venue and a cafe where you can sit and watch the kids play in the square. Additionally, there are small shops such as Dallas Music Shop, DiCaprio boutique and an antique store. From here you can also get a good look at the Renaissance-Romanesque clock tower.
The Gallery of Fine Arts was established in 1928 and opened to the public in 1931 to display and respond to Dalmatia's growing national and cultural pride. The statue of Gregory of Nin is nearby and the gallery cafe- terrace gives visitors a view of Diocletian's Palace. The gallery is home to 13th and 14th-century paintings, work by artists like Paolo Veneziano, Egon Schiele, photography, and contemporary art.
At the base of Marjan hill lies the Ivan Meštrović Gallery, which opened to the public in 1952. Due to recent renovations, visitors can enjoy the park grounds as well as the sculptural delights that are held in the two-story gallery. In addition to impressive sculptures, like the Pieta, reliefs, paintings, and drawings fill the gallery rooms. The gallery also holds special workshops, tours, and other educational activities.
Split's Riva is where you can take a seat at any one of the sidewalk cafes and enjoy the sights and smells. From people-watching to boat tours, the Riva is Split's seaside strip that locals and tourists frequent all year long. Here you can also find Hotel-Restaurant Adriana and Caffe Bar St. Riva, as well as the tourist bureau and Splitska Banka (Split Bank).
The Podrumi is often called the "basement halls" and it is here where you will find the remains of Diocletian's residential complex. Guided tours are available so that one may learn more about the construction of the halls as well as recent archaeological findings. Ancient stone carvings and other curiosities await you underground. In addition, the Croatian Association of Visual Art, HULU, also uses the halls as an exhibition space. As if that weren't enough, the basement halls are also home to various vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and other local trinkets.
This small art gallery, found on Marmontova, is home to art collectives such as Hrvatska Udruga Likovnih Umjetnika (HULU) - the Croatian Association of Visual Art. This art salon was initially a meeting place for the intellectual elite. HULU also has exhibitions in the Podrumi (Diocletian's basement cellars).
This well-established tennis club, located near Firule Beach, is where locals and visitors can stop by for a match or two. The club was founded in 1905 and continues to boast its legendary past as Croatian tennis pros like Goran Ivanišević heightened the club's reputation. Nearby you will also find cafe-bar lounges and nightclubs like Music Club O'Hara.
Overlooking Ul. kod Svetog Petra street in Stari Grad, Dominican Monastery of St. Peter the Martyr was established by Pope Sixtus IV in the year 1481 and was constructed later in the 16th century. This fortified monastery features two circle-shaped towers that were also used as lookout posts. In this monastery sits the Church of St. Peter the Martyr which was built in the late-15th century. Visitors can also explore the monastery museum and learn about the area’s rich history.
Sveti Klement is one of the largest islands in the Paklinski group of islands. Located in Adriatic Sea, the island has a total area of 5.28 square kilometers and a total coastline of 29.89 kilometers. The topography along the shore is rocky and barren and is covered with Marques Shrubs towards the center. The area is very popular for destination weddings and has a few restaurants and bars around for the benefit of the tourists.
