Fort Simpson is the only village in the entire province of the Northwest Territories. Many tourists visit Fort Simpson on their way to the Nahanni National Park Reserve. Traditionally, the village served as a fur trading site for the Dene people of the area due to the confluence of the Mackenzie and Laird Rivers, and this continued later on as the Hudson Bay Company established a trading post in what is now Fort Simpson. The village is a National Historic Site of Canada.
