Dragons, phoenixes, tigers, medallions and geometric patterns dominate the collection of Tibetan rugs in this intimate shop, which sells only Tibetan antiques. Vegetable dyes give the colors in these woollen floor and saddle rugs a true vibrancy. For a truly Tibetan flavor in any living room, there are also bronze altar statues and painted wood cabinets to choose from. That final decorative touch could then be provided by a framed Thogchak, a prayer ornament that Tibetans carry with them on their travels.
All the antique furniture sold by the friendly proprietor comes from the Beijing and Tianjin areas of northern China. These 18th and 19th century sturdy cabinets were designed in simple block styles, usually without any carving, and are just polished to retain their natural state. They come in various types of wood, including the Ming imperial wood huanghauli, the late Qing imperial wood zitan, blackwood and elm. Smaller items such as scholar's study treasures, leather boxes and dowry baskets are also good buys.
