Mozarthaus Vienna

The Mozarthaus is more commonly known as the Figarohaus, as it was here that Mozart composed the Marriage of Figaro between 1784 and 1787. The building is the only residence of Mozart’s that still exists in the city of Vienna. There are four floors to explore, which include a cafe, concert hall and learning center, to really get the full Mozart experience. You can also inspect reproductions of his scores and listen to his music on headphones as you walk through this historic landmark and place of pride for Viennese residents.

Platz am Hof

The city of Vienna is full of attractions and landmarks of historical significance. Platz am Hof has witnessed many events dating back to 1280. Earlier, it served as a camp for the Roman army. The place also housed markets for fish, vegetables, fruits and baked goods; later the markets were moved to different locations. With the backdrop of the royal and classy Palais Coll Alto and the surrounding facades, it's truly a perfect landscape to capture on your camera lens.

Looshaus

Adolf Loos' infamous "house without eyebrows" a reference to his refusal to adorn its window bays with stucco caused a major scandal in its day. Built 1909 to 1911, the minimalist house incurred Franz-Josef's wrath and he subsequently ordered the curtains to be permanently drawn on the Michaelertor side of Hofburg. While today it's difficult to imagine what all the fuss was about, it is still possible to marvel at the superb modernist fittings, designed by Loos himself for the Wiener Werkstätte, as the building is now owned by a bank.

Hofburg

Vienna Ring Road

The Ringstrasse was built in the place of the medieval walls that used to surround the center of Vienna, today the First District. On Christmas Eve 1857, the Emperor Franz Josef I announced the demolition of the original walls, in order to build an imperial boulevard as an expression of the glorious Habsburg Empire. Today, Vienna's Ringstrasse looks pretty much as it did in the last days of the Habsburgs, studded with key landmarks: 12 major public buildings (among them two museums), the State Opera House, the New Town Hall, the Stock Exchange, the university, the Burgtheater and the Parliament.

Heroes' Square

The Heldenplatz or Heroes' Square is noted worldwide as the site at which Hitler declared, in 1938, the annexation or Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich. Built during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, the plaza features the equestrian statues of heroic military figures - Prince Eugène of Savoy and Archduke Karl. Forming the outer plaza of the Hofburg, the sheer grandeur of the site makes for an excellent photo opp and even more after dark with the illuminated Neue Burg section. The square is often host to various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. From Heldenplatz, access two of Vienna's finest city parks - the Volksgarten and the Burggarten as well.

The Baroque Palace was built around the late 17th Century for a count. Once the count died, his widow sold it to the Schonborn family. The castle houses fine works of art from some of Europe's most influential artists, though many in the collection were sold in the 18th Century. The highlight is of course the garden and the famous tulips within.

Grinzing

Vienna is known for its famous heurigen restaurants, traditional taverns serving local wine and hearty food, often accompanied by live Viennese music. The district of Grinzing is full of such establishments, most of which are beautifully preserved and lend the whole district a magical feel. Authentic heurigen taverns hang a branch of pine above the door to indicate the sale of home-made wine. Traditionally, these taverns were small, intimate and great value for money. Fortunately, this still rings true today. Numerous vineyards are located nearby and make a great place for a walk. Follow in the footsteps of Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven who both found inspiration in the (then unspoiled) surrounding nature. Composer Gustav Mahler is buried in Grinzing Cemetery.
