Waiola Shave Ice

This "Shave ice" (snow cones to those from the mainland) institution could be considered the best example of this frozen treat in all of Oahu. At Waiola, there are more flavors than any other ice cream shop, as they grow exponentially with your own imagination. Some flavors range from plebeian banana to exotic li hing mui (pickled plum). There's a extra charge for additional ingredients that can be hidden inside; for example, ice cream or the Japanese favorite, red azuki beans.

Zagu Original Crystal & Pearl Shakes

Located in the Makai Marketplace in the sprawling Ala Moana Center, this ground floor kiosk is the best place to get out of the crush of shoppers and relax over a cool treat. Located just inside the stage side entrance, this stand is small and colorful. The menu is a gathering of bubble tea, shaved ice and crystal tea. The exotic flavors run the range of traditional to exotic, like ube and taro. Each boba drink is mixed to order, so be prepared for a wait and even a line. However, the shaved ice is especially refreshing with a long list of flavors.

La Gelateria

This little factory makes authentic Italian Gelato with a tropical twist. (To anyone who doesn't know, gelato is the upper-class cousin of ice cream). The flavors are inventive, often featuring local Hawaiian fruits and vegetables. Depending on how creative you are, you can munch on Campari, Coconut or Irish Cream Gelato. Although this gelato is sold at various points throughout the island, the least expensive way to get it is direct from the factory. Order it by the pint or the gallon.

Liliha Bakery

This bakery is a local secret that islanders have kept close to their hearts for years. The small diner counter almost always has a line and the food is simple and inexpensive. But ask anyone about the bakery and they will drool at the thought of the cocoa puffs. They are small cream puffs filled with a cocoa pudding and topped with a secret Chantilly frosting that is simply legendary. For under a buck a piece, this is one of the best things about Hawaii, ever. It is open from 6 a.m on Tuesday to 8 p.m on Sunday. Mondays remain closed - Lottie Tagupa

Lani Moo's Tropical Treats

Located across from the TSA checkpoint at the inter-island terminal at Honolulu International Airport, this ice cream stand is a wonderful opportunity for a cool and sweet airport treat before boarding a flight to parts unknown. The small stand is bright, cheery and offers a take on Hawaii's popular Meadow Gold ice creams. Furthermore, Lani Moo's Tropical Treats has the very best in Macadamia Nut, Blueberry Cheesecake, Rocky Road and French Vanilla flavors. The small treat is perfect to keep the kids at bay and keep parents' patience on track. It's also one of the more reasonable price treats in the airport.

Island Snow

The Island Snow in Kailua has become more famous for its "shave ice" (a tasty Hawaiian treat similar to a snow cone) than for its brand of apparel. You'll often see a line of people out the door, especially on the weekend. On the walls (and on the website) you'll find photos of President Barack Obama during his trips to Island Snow, one of his favorite spots while he's in town. In addition to the shave ice counter, the rest of the store sells apparel, mainly catering to surfers, skateboarders and snowboarders. It's a great place for souvenir t-shirts. Snowboards, watches, sunglasses and other apparel can also be found here.
