Located in the heart of the Gion entertainment district, this is a fine place to wander into if you are interested in textiles. Besides the accessories such as ties, purses and handbags sold here, there is a selection of stenciled cotton bags and antique silk items, many of them hand-painted. The textiles are not only from Kyoto; they have been acquired by the Nakamura family from all parts of Japan for the last hundred years.
This warehouse-style, cut-price, unisex-clothing chain store is situated in western Kyoto. Uniqlo stocks a wide selection of trousers, shirts, T-shirts, dresses, sweaters, children's wear, bags, hats, sunglasses, rain gear and other accessories. Alterations can be made quickly on the premises and parking is available. It is geared more to the younger market, but generally the fashion is high-street safe and suitable for all age groups.
This store is called Ai no mise or indigo shop. Here you will find a variety of natural bags, jackets, scarves, vests and even earrings in this classic color. Indigo dyeing is much less common now than in the past, but you can find many traditional goods at this shop, which is conveniently located on the corner of Imadegawa and Kaguraoka streets, not far from Ginkakuji Temple.
