Once an abandoned shipping yard, Coolidge Park has carried the spirit of revitalization from downtown to the North Shore. The park features a century-old, hand-carved carousel. Spread across 353 acres (143 hectares) of serene pastures along the Chickamauga Lake's eastern banks, the Booker T Washington State Park is an integral outdoor space for locals living in the scenic Chattanooga area. Operated and maintained by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the state park is divided into three different recreational areas, specifically dedicated to biking, fishing and picnicking. Fishing zones come with boat launching areas and pools with bathhouses, while the picnicking regions come with grills and playgrounds for the little ones.

During the United States Civil War, the Confederate armies of Chattanooga used the East Brow of Lookout Mountain as their lookout point. The panoramic view of the valley gave the Confederates an advantage over any approaching Union Army. However, during the bloody battle for Chattanooga, the northern troops waited for the clouds to fall upon the point and advanced under the cloud cover. Before the Southern troops knew what was happening, their fate was sealed. This park and museum commemorates this struggle for visual superiority. The Confederates were defeated and the post captured, but it was a valiant battle now known as the Battle Above the Clouds.

Just south of Chattanooga is the site of the area's longest and bloodiest battle of the United States Civil War. The U.S. War Department (now the Department of the Interior) declared this battlefield a National Military Park in the 1890s. It has attracted millions of visitors over the years. Chickamauga Battlefield, Lookout Mountain Battlefield and Point Park, Missionary Ridge and Moccasin Bend are the highlights of this attraction. A visitor's center provides detailed information about the history of the battlefield and the battles fought here. The self-guided tour takes you through several battle sites, the Wilder Tower Monument, and a common area for picnics and recreation.
