Topography of Terror

Not much is left of the Gestapo's former headquarters at Wilhelmstrasse. The original buildings were severely damaged during wartime raids, and little remained after the end of the War. Excavations in the early 1980s brought the foundations - a long wall covered with pale white tiles -to light, and a makeshift museum was immediately established on the wasteland close to Hitler's bunker. Soon after a permanent museum building was constructed to shelter the Topography of Terror. The museum is also home to one of the few remnants of the Berlin Wall. The Topography of Terror stands beside the Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Memorial as one of Berlin's most important memorials to a dark chapter in German history.

Künstlerhaus Bethanien

Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a state-of-the-art contemporary art gallery. The gallery is supported by an association promoting avant-garde artists both local and international. The Künstlerhaus houses upwards of 20 resident artists and hosts organized events, performances and exhibitions. The gallery was originally housed in the historic Central Deaconess Institute and Hospital Bethanien, which was commissioned by King Frederic William IV of Prussia during the 1800s. After left-wing autonomists squatted in the building in 2005, the gallery was moved to a former manufacturing building. Today, the gallery is one of Berlin's premiere contemporary art spaces, and is particularly famous for the electonric and media arts that its residents have created.

East Side Gallery

Deutsch-Russisches Museum

Standing tall at the sight where World War II ended, Deutsch-Russisches Museum is the only joint venture of two countries to protect and commemorate the location of an historic event. After the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Germany, this place was preserved to mark the end of Nazi rule and the beginning of a new era. The museum that stands today was established in 1995 and has various exhibits, photographs and documents that depict the history of this iconic event. A lot of documentaries, movies, presentations, music performances and readings are also showcased here, for better understanding of the eventful past that was witnessed here.

Zwieseler Straße 4, Berlin, Allemagne, 10318
Allied Museum

It wasn't just food that the Allies airlifted into Berlin during the 1948/49 Russian blockade. Huge amounts of coal, petrol and even cars were flown in to help keep the strategically important Western outpost of Berlin intact. One of these huge four-engine planes now stands in front of the former Outpost Cinema along with a few pieces of the Wall and a French train carriage. The Museum of the Allies or Alliierten Museum recounts the fascinating history of Berlin from the end of the War to the fall of the Wall in 1989. The story is told from the perspective of the three Allies (USA, Britain and France) who occupied Berlin during these years. This moving story of peacemaking and confrontation, of hope and despair, is well worth a visit.

Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz

On 20th January 1942 - on Hitler's orders - the SS and government top-brass discussed the technical arrangements for the "final solution of the Jewish problem" in this very place. 50 years later, this villa has been turned into a museum for visitors to remember and to learn from the horrors of the past. The permanent exhibition recounts the tragic history of the Holocaust (1933-45) in a lucid yet sensitive fashion. An educational department offers study days and seminars in political education. The Mediothek contains a comprehensive collection of documents covering, amongst other things, nationalism, antisemitism and Neo-Nazism. The admission is free.
