Place Saint-Marc

Seule place vénitienne à bénéficier du titre de « piazza », la place Saint-Marc (ou Piazza San Marco) est le centre politique, religieux et social de la ville. Située à une extrémité du Grand Canal, elle est entourée par certains des édifices historiques les plus emblématiques de Venise. La basilique Saint-Marc est le point focal de la place, une église vénitienne-byzantine du XIIe siècle qui est magnifiquement décorée avec des mosaïques en or et des gravures somptueuses. De chaque côté s’élèvent les Procuraties, de majestueux bâtiments qui abritaient autrefois les bureaux et appartements des procurateurs. Deux colonnes érigées en hommage aux saints de la ville, Marc et Théodore d'Amasée, se trouvent à proximité, tandis que le splendide palais des Doge's, l’imposante Campanile, la Bibliothèque nationale et plusieurs musées occupent le reste de l’espace autour de la plus grande place de Venise, qui reflète la riche histoire de la ville.

Palais des Doges

Plusieurs couches de styles architecturaux différents forment le magnifique palais des Doges. Symbole du gouvernement et du patrimoine politique de Venise, ce palais historique était autrefois le siège des Doges – les premiers magistrats de l’ancienne République de Venise. Les fondations du complexe, tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui, furent posées au XIVe siècle. Au fil des ans, le palais a été reconstruit, agrandit et restauré à plusieurs reprises, créant un mélange époustouflant de styles artistiques et architecturaux allant du Médiéval à la Renaissance. Chef-d’œuvre gothique, le palais des Doges abrite des détails exquis comme des sculptures, des fresques, d’élégantes arches et de gracieuses colonnes. Les appartements du Doge, l’Armurerie, les Prisons, la Cour et les Loggias ont tous été magnifiquement restaurés, avec de nombreux trésors tapis dans chaque coin de ce majestueux palais. Cette icône historique abrite également le Museo dell'Opera et sa vaste collection d’art.

Punta della Dogana is a stunning art gallery located on the triangular piece of land that separates the Grand Canal from the Giudecca Canal. Set in the former customs house, a beautiful 17th-century building, this gallery houses the permanent collection of world's numero uno art collector, Francois Pinault. Here, you will find his famous personal collection, besides several other exhibits pertaining to contemporary art.

Collection Peggy Guggenheim

À deux pas de la Gallerie dell'Accademia, sur le Grand Canal, se trouve l’un des meilleurs musées de Venise. Ce musée de renommée mondiale est géré par l’institution du même nom, la fondation Solomon R. Guggenheim, qui est également en charge du célèbre musée Guggenheim à New York. Palazzo Grassi

Palazzo Grassi is situated in an imposing palace designed by Massari, right opposite Cà Rezzonico. This 18th-century building has changed many hands and was used as a center for arts by the Fiat group who had it restored. It is now owned by François Pinault and hosts regular temporary exhibits from his personal collection. Those interested in art and architecture will find their ground floor bookshop fascinating with their impressive selection. Make a pit stop at their on-site cafe to replenish yourself before heading out for your Venetian exploration.

Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia

Housed in the stately Fontego dei Turchi that was built in the 13th Century, Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia is a truly enlightening museum and was established in 1923. You'll find fossils, minerals, botanical collections, entomological collections, protozoa, mollusks and all kinds of vertebrates on display spanning 700 million years. This natural history museum also features an archaeology, anatomy and other repositories. Check out the scientific library, Cetaceans Gallery and other interesting exhibitions that are educational. Also noteworthy is their extensive bibliotheca that is a reference point for those interested in natural sciences. This Grand Canal museum is a great alternative to other historic museums in town.

Giardini Papadopoli

When you enter Venice through the Piazzale Roma, look to your left and you will see the expansive greens of the Giardini Papadopoli. Spread across 0.87 hectares (2.17 acres), this garden was established in 1834. Decked with flowering plants and fruit trees, Giardini Papadopoli was beautifully designed by Francesco Bagnara, who was a professor at l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Venise and who also designed the Fenice theater. The garden is adorned with sculptures, ornate benches and magnificent fountain. It is also home to a separate playground for children.
